 Yesterday I was having no problems with my DVD/CD burner. It's been running fine for 8 months (as of yesterday). Sometime during the day today my power went out (for a change) for about 3 minutes. When it came back up and I rebooted I found my dvd/cd burner won't read anything. At reboot, light comes on and I can hear it start to spin up but it stops after a few seconds then idles. My second bay burner is still fine. I received the 'recoverd from a serious error message' and forwarded to MS which suggests the 'updated driver' causing the problem which I haven't installed (since there isn't one). I've uninstalled-reinstalled through device manager, updated my firmware, there is no driver update and I'm at a COMPLETE loss as to what's causing the problem and any possible solution. Any ideas? I'm contemplating reinstalling XP but would rather avoid that if at all possible since I have no idea if that would even help since I don't know the culprit. Thanks for any help anyone may be able to offer. I'm baffled.

Does the drive have a play button? If so, you can try hooking it up to the digital audio in on your sound card and playing an audio CD. This will work entirely separate from the operating system (apart from if the OS has the CD input muted). This will at least tell you if it's a hardware or software issue.

The other thing you might try is setting the drive as the first device in the boot order and rebooting with a bootable disc in the drive, to see if the generic CD driver can read it.
