Photo thumbnails have annoying icon on them, all of a sudden!

Suddenly, when I view the thumbnails of my photos in My Pictures with Windows
Explorer, each thumbnail has an annoying Internet Explorer logo on it,
practically obscuring the entire thumbnail. The logo is the blue "e" with
the gold swish.

How did this happen? And how can I go back to plain thumbnails showing
just the small version of the photo?

Thanks in advance for any help solving this mystery.

I'm sorry but I don't understand the instructions. How do I get to the page
for Restore Thumbnail Views? I don't know how to open XP, if that is what
you mean. Please "walk" me through it.

Click the link to Kelly's site right below Kelly's original text. I've
repeated her instructions below:

I have to download a tweak or something from kelly's site? I don't know her
and have no idea if it is safe to download this file. I think I'd rather
live with the icons than take a chance on getting my computer really messed
up. Does not MS have a fix for me?

You may not know Kelly, but I've known her for years, as have most other
MVPs. She's tops and her store of fixes is unsurpassed. Believe me, you can
trust Kelly.

PS -- No, MS won't have a fix. These are the kinds of things that computer
techs "fix" by diving into the Registry, re-registering DLLs, etc. We could
give you a long set of instructions, complete with warnings about what you
might do wrong, etc., but Kelly worked up and provided a fix that does all
the hard work for you and saves us the work of explaining it to you and
others over and over again.

I'll second Gary's comment. Care in what sites to trust is certainly
prudent, but Kelly's site is one of the oldest, most well-known, and
most-trusted of the Windows support sites available. Although not
every tweak can possibly be effective in every case, Kelly's site and
her tweaks have helped many thousands of people.

Nobody should distrust or fear anything found on her site.

Well, maybe I'll give it a try. I'm just suspicious of executable files!

You know, not all My Pictures folders' thumbnails have the icon on them --
just the ones I transferered from photo CDs I made on my desktop. I may
just try to live with them.

You can open the fix file using notepad and inspect the changes if you
want to see what's happening. I second what others have said about
Kelly's site. In my opinion, it's safe, BUT it is wise of you to be
suspicious. Hang around a while longer and you'll see lots of
references to Kelly's site... and no complaints. This means that her
fixes work, or they totally break your computer and you never get
another one to come back and complain with. :) Just kidding, of
course. ::putting on my flame retardant suit:: :)

Download a program called ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility for NT)and
backup your registry before using Kelly's fix, if you really want to
be safe. Others here will verify the reliability of ERUNT. I have it
set to backup my registry on every boot up... and I save several days
of backups, just in case. You could also use set a System Restore
Point in XP, but I've had that utility — made by Microsoft — fail to
work. ERUNT has never failed me yet. While ERUNT does not backup the
various other file types that Sys Res does, it DOES backup the entire
set of registry hives.

You may have learned in Sunday School that God rested on the 7th day.
Well, that's not really true. On the 7th day God created Kelly's
website.

Lol, how true.

I'd give it a try, can't hurt. Still, after this added info, I'm not sure it
will work. What program did you use to create your CDs? How did you copy
them back to the HD?

You may have learned in Sunday School that God rested on the 7th day.
Well, that's not really true. On the 7th day God created Kelly's
website.

It almost seems like a "watermark". They are sometimes applied to pictures
during a software trial period prior to purchasing or registering the
imaging software. If it is only applied on the thumbnails it could just
indicate that a proprietary image file format was used on your photo CDs. It
might be the default thumbnail view for pictures created with the software
you used to make those photo cds.

Try converting one or more of those saved pictures to JPG or BMP and see if
the new thumbnail created for the converted image still has the icon on it.
