Pc slow on shutdown and boot

Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice please.
PC is getting a bit old now and seems to 'hang',(no drive activity for
3 min))
when closing down and then when starting up.
I have run both updated Spybot and McAfee scans to no avail.
Is there anything else I can try.
Any help appreciated,

Just Spybot and McAfee scans?

Disk cleanup?
(To clear up clutter and remove all but the last restore point?)

Gone through the list of things installed and uninstalling the unnecessary?
(Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs)

Performed a CHKDSK to make sure the hard disk drive is okay?

Checked your startups to make sure they are necessary?

I would also suggest scanning with something like SuperAntiSpyware (Free is
fine) to make sure Spybot has not missed anything.

A good disk defragmentation might help as well...

Might want to also archive/backup some of the older stuff you no longer use
to clear up disk space (and for safety anyway) as well as check your system
restore settings (I recommend about 1GB of System Restore space - more than
that might cause more trouble than its worth) and Internet Explorer
Temporary Internet File Size (below 128MB seems to work fine.)

(1) [start]>[Run] and type 'msconfig'
Uncheck all the unnecessary entries for start up items under the
'STARTUP' tab. 'Unnecessary' depends on what programs you don't require
at startup. Listing the startup items (or a screenshot) would help

(2) Goto [administrative tools]. It should be under [control panel].
Goto services and disable unnecessary services.

DO NOT disable services randomly without knowing what they do!

There is no blanket recommendation for what is necessary and what is
not...it all depends on your computing environment and
hardware/software. There are plenty of services guides on the net that
tell you what each service does. Please google.

EDIT: (added) 'Services Guide for Windows XP'

(3) Download and run Ccleaner to remove temp and junk files.

(4) Do a thorough defrag. I recommend Diskeeper pro. (Many don't like
payware defraggers. I like DK. YMMV). There are free trial versions at
the diskeeper website, so you dont even need to spend any $$ if you dont
want to. Defrag all your drives, the $MFT and do a boottime defrag.

Hopefully this should speed up things a bit. Good luck.

Do you have "clear pagefile at shutdown" enabled? If so this will increase
your start/shutdown times noticeablly.

Navigate to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management

if the value is set to 1 then it is enabled change this to a value of 0 to
turn it off.
