Windows 2000 PartitionMagic A.K.A. PartitionTragic

I had the very bad idea to install two OS's with the help of
PartitionMagic on my Windows 2000.

I copied my data to a 200GB SATA disk and partitioned the original 80GB
disk SATA 2 x 40GB.

After installing W2000 the nightmare started. I only have one OS
installed (Windows 2000 Professional), however while booting it ask to
select 1. Windows 2000 Professional and 2. Windows 2000 Professional!!
Yes twice! Besides W2000 is terribly slow.

I tried to delete the 80GB partitions and start all over again, but it
doesn´t work. Still the PartitionMagic stuff remains in the disk.
Still asks to select between W2K Pro and W2K Pro and the computer is
slow as hell.

Question: What should I do to delete PartitionMagic for good?

See if your question is answered in the Partition Magic FAQs.
If it is not then the standard recipe would be to do this:
- Create & test a Win2000 boot floppy.
- Restore the standard Master Boot Record (MBR).

Post again in case you need further instructions.

Partition Magic did not cause the problem.

You need to simply remove the unneeded entry from boot.ini
as reinstalls often keep the original MBR.

As to win2k being slow, chances are you need to install the proper chipset
and/or controller drivers.
Reinstalling win2k will just leave you with the same problem
 
Okay, I restored the MBR (thanks Pegasus) using MbrFix.exe but couldn´t
find boot.ini cause it was hidden by PM. I really forgot boot.ini cause
I thought PM used a different approach. The solution was to edit it
anyway and changed timeout to zero. Thanks philo.

Regarding the sluggishness, you're right philo it wasn´t because of PM
but due to an unformatted partition. Now it´s okay.

Now another question, how to create a double boot w/o PM.

There are a number of third-party boot managers around,
e.g. XOSL (free). I recommend that you practise with a
spare disk until you are fully familiar with them rather than
risking your current installation.

XOSL requires either a dedicated 15 MByte partition (could
be a logical drive!) or else some space on an existing FAT
partition. Other boot managers have different requirements.

Glad you got it working ok now

BTW: boot.ini is normally a hidden file so that may be wgy you did not see
it.

anyway if the machine is working OK now...no sense in fooling with boot.ini

Thanks, will check that one.
