Open with... - How to get option back

I plugged in an old USB scanner and up came the "Open with....."
dialogue box.
Without thinking I chose Photoshop AND "Always perform this action....."
Then realised I might want to save to Word or Irfanview.
Can't seem to find a way to "Undo" the Photoshop option.
Tried right-clicking on the scanner icon in My Computer but am not
seeing any "Opens with..." setting to change.
How do I get XP to ask what programme to open with again?

Open Windows Explorer, right-click your scanner and select Properties. On
the AutoPlay tab (assuming there is one), either select an application to
use or select "Prompt me each time to choose an action".

There is no AutoPlay tab.
When I right-click on scanner, I get:
Scan
Get picture using scanner wizard
Create Shortcut
Rename
Properties

When I click Properties I get two tabs:
General (with option to Test scanner), and
Colour management

Strange. On my other system with a USB scanner, bringing up properties show
General, Events, and Color Management. On the Events tab is where I can
specify a program or action. Dunno why you don't have an Events tab.
Hopefully someone else might know.

Jon.

After reading your post this morning, I really mess with things up. First, I
try right-clicking on my HP PSC 1410 Scanner under My Computer and notice the
events. There were same events as mentioned by you. Then I choose Properties
and there was an Event tab which is missing in your case. You still didn't
mention your scanner name. There was an option called "Prompt for which
program to run..". At that time the option was available. I click that option
and choose Photoshop and make it default by choosing "Always use this program
program for this action." and here the story begin. After that the "Prompt
for whcih program to run" got disabled and double-clicking the scanner open
Photoshop. I try different option in Event tab (which is missing in your
case) but to no avail.

Then I tried deleting file associations like TIF, JPG and PDF in hope that
it will come up with the same dialog box and will ask for choose an Event.
But my bad luck. I search google but still unlucky.

I also tried to change Scan Button Event's properties through HP Solution
Center program which installed with drivers but no results. I search the
Windows Registry for Photoshop entries but there were thousand of entries
concerning with Photoshop.

At the end, I decided to uninstall the Photoshop. After uninstalling
Photoshop, double-clicking the Scanner in my computer was brining nothing.

Good News Is that problem is being solved after restarting the computer.
After making a restart and double-clicking the Scanner brings the same Dialog
Box which was asking me "Select the program to launch for this action...".

I didn't imagine that it was too dificult to resolve this simple small
problem. It took half an hour for me to create and solve the problem. One
more thing that the option "Prompt for which program to run" is still
disable. Don't know why but I think Microsoft needs a little workout on it if
it is the feature of Windows not Scanner manufacturer's. Don't know if it is
being solved in Windows Vista.

I am not too happy to resolve the problem by uninstalling Photoshop. There
should be some simple way. If you are going to try the same then make sure
that you have the Photoshop CD in you bag. So later you can install it.

Hope this help, let us know!

Don't know what happened but am seeing "Select the program to launch for
this action" again.
I turned off my computer last night, with the USB scanner still plugged
in and restarted this morning.
Didn't check to see if I still had the same problem, so don't know if
this action alone solved it. It may be that it didn't because I assume
my settings would have been saved.
However, I then removed USB lead and connected again.
Next time I opened scanner I got the choose program dialogue box.
So, perhaps just the action of removing/reconnecting the USB lead may be
all that is necessary.
Should have stated earlier that my scanner is an old Tiny 42 Bit USB
model made by Visioneer (with Visioneer driver), just in case other
posters have similar problems.
By the way, I still don't see the Events tab in Properties.
Thanks to all those that helped.
