My Internet Explorer kept clinging, so I have Dr. Watson running in the
background. Now Dr. Watson gives me various messages associated with
OLEAUT32.DLL. The last message read "OLEAUT32.DLL attempted to use a null
data pointer variable." I'm not sure what that means, but I do know that my
computer has an older and newer version of this DLL ( older is April 1999 and
the newer is August 2008). Could my computer be experiencing some sort of
conflict by having both versions of the same DLL installed?

Remove Dr Watson. Either the problem will go away, or you will get a new
error message with more information. Post that information
(http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/post.html (part 3b)).

Potentially, YEAH, depends upon where they are located. Soooo, where are
they?

Is IE fully updated?

Is the rest of the system fully updated?

Did you install or uninstall an old Microsoft program after updating the
system?

Did you use an unofficial updater?

Thank you Jeff Richards. I will give it a try, see what happens and if I get
more error messages, I will post them.

Thank you MEB. I am running Windows 98 SE, that probably says a bit in
itself. I recently reformatted and reinstalled the program and have always
updated windows using "windows update". In addition to this, I have had to
update a few non-windows programs to surf and use the internet. Now as far as
the OLEAUT32.DLL being in two different locations, they are. The latest
OLEAUT32.DLL (August 2008) is in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and the older one is in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\setup\OS\SYSTEM ( March 1999).

Okay, then they are where they are supposed to be.
For comparison:
my version
2.40.4518 - 929,792 bytes - Modified Wednesday, January 09, 2008 2:50:52
P.M.[internally], which has the date of OS installation shown in Explorer

See if it is temporary as Jeff suggested, though you may want to run
Anit-Virus and SpyWare checks for the "clinging" issue.
IF you are on DSL or Cable, you may be experiancing an attack or a refusal
to disconnect from some site.... try refreshing the IP or shutting off the
firewall access temporarily... several complain UTUBE and a few other sites
are causing these issues. Be careful of FLASH objects and other like
coding/usage.
It is a JUNGLE out here, and you don't get to carry an elephant gun for
protection, so make sure your mosquito netting is at least
bullet-resistant...

Let us know if a new message pops-up [after removing watson monitoring]
with its EXACT inclusions. Many of those [missing export/null pointer/etc.]
issues come from the mis-match of files in any 9X OS
[XP-NT-95-98-2000-Millennium].

I wouldn't mind seeing the whole DrWatson diagnosis report, (despite you
are likely better off with Richards & Badour). Open Explorer to
C:\Windows\DrWatson. Click or D-Clk the bottom .wlg file there. It will
open in DrWatson. R-Clk in the Diagnosis window to copy & post the full
report.

OLEAUT32.DLL is an IE file. Therefore, could be some site is doing
something strange to upset it. Post the site to see whether it happens
to all of us, but it may vary depending what one clicks at the site &
other variables. Maybe try the site at a later date to see whether the
problem has gone away.

My current file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM is...
OLEAUT32.DLL v.2.40.4518 9/3/01 929,792 bytes

Here are what is in my .cab's...

Win98SE WIN98_39.cab.... v.2.40.4275 4/23/99 598,288 bytes
IE5 MDAC_IUE5.cab.. v.2.40.4275 3/8/99 598,288 bytes
IE6 OAINST.cab........ v.2.40.4518 3/16/01 929,792 bytes

Other than date (looks like MEB has a plausible explanation for that),
looks like mine came straight of my IE6 .cab. Yours probably is fine,
but here is how to get a new copy...

(1) "START, Find, F/F, Oainst.cab".

This is the IE6 .cab file that contains Oleaut32.dll. Likely, you
see it is in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files". If not,
substitute appropriately below.

(2) "START button, Run, SFC".
(3) Bolt "Extract one file from installation disk".
(4) Enter "Oleaut32.dll" in the "Specify..." box.
(5) Click "Start".
It should offer to "Save file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM".
If not, make it so-- but only if you really need it!
Otherwise, go to... C:\Windows\Temp... just for a look.
(6) In "Restore from", enter...
"C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files".
(7) Click "OK".
