After I formatted and reinstalled Windows XP on my 3 year old Dell, now I
can windowsupdate. I go into the update webpage and after it searches the
web and the PC, it gives me a message that can not proceed and that should
look for some help here (newsgroup).

Doesn't windows update work for old equipment? Mine is a valid PC no
pirating.

Hello Jorge,

Download and install SP1 and then SP3, after that try again.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
