Hello,

Is it really necessary to have an extra firewall and antispam when I already
have windows firewall on? Isn't NOD32 sufficient enough?

Thank you!

No, it's not necessary!
For the average homeuser, the Windows Firewall does a fantastic job at its
core mission and is really all you need if you have a good quality
'real-time' anti-virus program -NOD32 falls in that category- [and another
firewall on your router if you're on high speed internet connection].
In conjunction with *WinXP* Firewall use:
Seconfig XP 1.0
http://seconfig.sytes.net/
Seconfig XP is able configure Windows not to use TCP/IP as transport
protocol for NetBIOS, SMB and RPC, thus leaving TCP/UDP ports 135, 137-139
and 445 (the most exploited Windows networking weak point) closed.)
OR
Configuring NT-services much more secure.

Also, routinely practice Safe-Hex.

A-S applications - for non-viral malware.
The effectiveness of an individual A-S scanners can be wide-ranging and
oftentimes a collection of scanners is best. There isn't one software that
cleans and immunizes you against everything. That's why you need multiple
products to do the job i.e. overlap their coverage - one may catch what
another may miss, (grab'em all).

SuperAntispyware - Free

and
Windows Defender - Free (build-in in Vista)

WD monitors the start-registry and hooks registers/files to prevent spyware
and worms to install to the OS.

"...Windows Defender did excel in behavior-based protection, which detects
changes to key areas of the system without having to know anything about
the actual threat."

Good luck

In my opinion, no.

In my opinion, yes.

You must use only one software firewall - Windows Firewall or a
third-party firewall.

Windows Firewall provides a basic level of protection. A third-party
firewall offers additional features that can improve your security. In
most cases, when you install a third-party firewall it will offer to
turn off Windows Firewall or do so automatically.

NOD32 does not have a firewall.

Windows Firewall is not an anti-spyware application.

You can get the software you need in one of two ways: install an
all-in-one suite that includes everything, or install individual
applications. Unless you're technically advanced I would suggest an
all-in-one suite.

However, regardless of the software you install, by far the most
important way to keep yourself safe on the internet is to educate
yourself about the dangers and be resolute in avoiding risky behavior.
