No viruses, but web browsing is insanely slow

I recently put together a new Vista Ult. box. Unfortunately soon after it
got infected with a strain of Vundo, which I think I've erraticated, but
somehow the machine still seems compramised. I can FTP, Email, Telnet with
no problems, but once I open a web browser the wait for pages to load is
painful.

I have ClamWin as my main anti-virus software - I"ve scanned in SAFE MODE
memory and all partitions
And I've ran all these programs in SAFE MODE numerous times to no avail
Spybot S&D
Ad-aware 2007 Free
Super Anti-spyware
Windows Defender
Malicious Software Removal
HijackThis (nothing of concern comes up)
Replaced Hosts file

Soon after I run these programs web browsing is zippy for a little bit, but
then strarts crawling. Images or ads won't load and then pages time out. I'm
not sure what else I can check to see what is going on. Other machines on
same network work fine.

Thanks.

Hugh

So what happens if you uninstall your AV?

Not sure. Haven't tried. However, Clam isn't real-time protection, so not
sure what difference it would make....

I have no probs using the programs below.

Security Programs that I have installed, .

Vista’s Firewall works very well.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions), FREE,
auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster 4.0 is a non-intrusive, FREE Anti-Spyware Program that runs
in the background (no scanning by you!).
Update it once a fortnight, and let it do its work in the background!

When you say "A web browser" do you mean IE or do you have an alternative?

You could check all your IE settings and disable any add ons you find,
or maybe simpler try installing Firefox and see if things improve. If
something has attacked IE then using another browser should establish
whether the problem is traffic flow per-se or a broken IE.

I am not sure why running any of these programs should give you a
temporary improvement that goes away after a time. I guess the other
possibility is some kind of memory leak, or perhaps a "Temp" folder
setting too small. Once this slowdown happens do other things then slow
down or are you pretty sure that other things continue as normal?

try uninstalling ad aware 2007
I found it made my browser go very slow
uninstalled it- it pipped up

Hugh, have you tried to use a registry cleaner? The vundo might have
monkeyed with your registry before you got rid of it. I also suggest
that you post your HijackThis log here 'HiJack This Logs'
I'm most certain they can get you right.

Your knowledge is appreciated. One can never learn too much.

Spybot S&D has a useful function that tweaks the hosts file which has
the lovely effect of preventing spyware from installing itself on your
computer as well as blocking most internet ads. The slowness you report
is because your browser still tries to connect and load the ads (many of
which are completely benign). If you have the status bar active, you'll
see ad.doubleclick.com most often when your browser is clunking along.
Programs like eDexter can usually help by loading a generic image in the
place of ads, but I'm having trouble finding a way to apply this to
Spybot.

Some of the other programs you use probably tinker with the hosts file
too. It can get a bit confusing.
