Does the sound work, if the headphones are plugged into the green
audio (Lineout) connector on the back of the computer ? The purpose of
that test, is to see if any sound is working at all.

What kind of computer is it ? Is it a Dell/HP/Gateway/Acer pre-built
computer ? Or is this computer, one that your friend built as a
do-it-yourself computer ?

For front audio to work, there is a cable assembly that leads from the
front of the computer, to an audio header either on the motherboard,
or on a sound card. If the cable is not connected, that is one reason
for only the front audio to be missing.

If the Lineout green jack on the back of the computer is also not working,
that can be because the AC'97 audio header (10 pins, 2x5 matrix) is missing
the two jumper plugs. If the cable assembly from the front of the computer
case is disconnected, those jumpers have to be put back, to continue to
enjoy sound from the rear audio connector. (This paragraph does not apply
to computer which have HDaudio or Azalia built-in sound.)

And finally, this could also be caused by a driver problem. If you go to
Start:Run and type "dxdiag" in the command box (not including the double
quotes), then press return, you can run Microsoft DirectX Diagnostic.
There is a sound test in there. If the sound test runs, and no software
errors are reported, and yet you aren't hearing any sound, then it could
be there is a wiring problem. (Click "Test DirectSound" button.)

It can even be a case, where the user has accidentally clicked a "Mute"
box in the Mixer control panel, which is causing the sound volume to
be zero.

So try a few more tests, to get enough symptoms to proceed further.

WHich "jack?" If you are talking about the audio jack that "may" come
with CD / DVD drives, this "jack" will only play audio when you set
the audio quality to not "digital" in the sound card settings.

Digital "play-back" sends the audio over the motherboard and out thru
the audio out "jack" of the sound card (usually at the back of most
PCs.)

He can go to device manager and see if he even has a sound card
installed...or onboard sound.
If all is OK..no red or yellow exclamation marks...then control
panel/sounds& audio and check to make sure nothing is muted and the volume
is adjusted correctly.
Does he have speakers?? do they work?? is he using the right headphone
plug??
