I have lost all sound twice now in the last two months. I did the fix below
both times and it worked. Does anyone know why I have to keep doing this?
Thanks
On the System Properties panel, Advanced tab, Environment Variables button,
under the User variables click New and create a variable named
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices with the value of 1.
Open the Device Manager and select Show hidden devices from the View menu.
Under the Sound, video and game controllers group, find your sound card(s)
and
disable it/them (don’t need to uninstall).
Then uninstall the following devices:
Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
Select Scan for hardware changes from the Action menu. Now the system should
redetect and reinstall the deleted devices automatically. You may get non
signed driver warnings, click continue.
Enable the devices you disabled in step 4. You may need to restart the
computer.
The problem should be disappeared, you should be able to play sounds.
