I am attempting to take control of a folder in Windows XP Pro with SP2 but
am unable to enable the security tab in Windows Explorer. Disabling the
Simple Folder View in folders options has no effect.

Any suggestions?

Try disabling Simple File Sharing in Folder Options/View.

Are you sure the folder is located on a drive formatted NTFS?
Check the drives properties if you're not sure. My Computer ->
Right click on drive -> Select Properties from the menu. The
file system will be listed on the general page.

Good luck

I tried, but it did not work.

In fact, none of the following appear to help in solving the problem:

* Logged in as administrator
* Verified that the drive is formatted with NTFS
* Verified that 'Use simple file sharing' is not checked in Eplorer
under Tools>Folder Options>View>Advanced settings is unchecked
* Disabled the policy option to Remove Security Tab in User
Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer
* Verified there are no values set in the registry entry for
HKCU\Software\Micrsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer that could
be a problem

Also, this workstation is running in a Workgroup (i.e., not configured for a
domain), and current with all updates (including SP2).

I am at a complete loss at this point.

Found the problem: kb 290403 "How to Set Security in Windows XP Professional
That Is Installed in a Workgroup"

The solution was to set
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\ForceGuest=0

( Whew... that was not an easy one to find... even with Google. :) )
