Not Me

Interesting thing, this machine has XP installed and was working for 2
years.
P4 2.53Ghz/1GB DDR/80GB
I can actually boot to XP, but it locks up with corrputed file errors.
The keyboard works both in XP and to access BIOS.
It started acting up, kept telling me this file can't be read, that file
can't be read, so I tried to run sfc, but it says can't write to disk.
I tried to boot from the XP CD, but when it gets to 'starting windows' the
keyboard quits. I can't hit the enter key to start setup.
I didn't have this problem when I installed XP on this system the first
time.
I tried 4 different XP CDs all with the same reslut.
I also tried a USB Keyboard and a different PS2 KB, all work on other
systems.
Any ideas?

try a new hard drive

old HDD unplugged from power and EIDE cable
Brand New 80GB Seagate 7200RPM ATA100, jumpered as master/single, on it's
own cable, same result.
No other HDD, the ony other EIDE device is the CD drive, which is master on
the secondary cable.
any other ideas?

On dis-assembly, I found the CPU Heatsink was loose, one of the brackets had
broken.
Apparently the cpu was overheating & going into reduced functionality mode.
After replacing the heatsink mount on the motherboard and reinstalling
everything, it works fine.
But I did have to do a repair install of Windows. The CPU being overheated
apparently made it write bad data to the disk.
