Just put a new hard drive in my desktop. Using Windows XP on the
desktop and Vista on my wireless laptop. No problem with the laptop.
It connects through the wireless connection just fine and I can surf all
I want.

After loading up XP I wanted to do all the update downloads and this is
when I noticed I have no connection. The desktop has an onboard LAN
connected to a DLink router. Nothing. I tried going directly from my
cable modem in the desktop and still nothing. When I go to Network
Connections, there are none!! When I go through the New connection
Wizard and select Connect to the Internet, Setup my connection manually,
and connect using a broadband connection this is always on, I get nothing.

Could one of you pros please help an old man?? Thanks.

Sounds like you need to install the drivers for your network
adapter. Go to the computer or motherboard manufacturer's web
site and look for a support section. The correct drivers should
be available there.

While you're at it you might want to check Device Manager. Go
to Start -> Run and enter devmgmt.msc in the Open box. There
may be other problem devices listed.

After completing a new installation, it's usually a good idea
to install the latest drivers for all your hardware. Check the
manufacturer's site for updates drivers for your system.

Good luck

Does the Router came with CD software?, if it does then insert that CD but
before that make sure this correct:
1- Connect an Ethernet Cable to one of the LAN ports on the router and to
the NIC card on the PC.
Reboot your Computer and insert the Router Software CD and follow the Wizard
to install and configure the PC to connect through the Router.
Read this article although it is for wireless but the same procedure for the
wired:
Set up a secure wireless network using Windows Connect Now

Your D-link router has led's on the front. Power should be lit, Status should
blink, ADSL should be lit, Link 1 and 2 should be lit. If not diconnect power
for 20 seconds and try again. Finally you may have to reset the router, I can
help with that as I have a 504G

Thanks to everyone for your help. This one worked. Luckily the laptop
still had a connection so I just downloaded and burned the drivers to a
cd and then ran them on the new desktop and bingo. Again, thanks to all
for you kind help.
