I have installed SP3 on my notebook without any problems so decided to apply
the update to my desktop.

The service pack was installed successfully howver on reboot the Windows
logo screen is scrolling endlessly. If use to scroll 3 times and go into
Windows.

I have tried Safe mode and Last Know Good but the system will not boot in
these modes either.

Please advise.

I should add it's Windows XP SP3 RC1. Downloaded 'legally' from Technet
downloads. I would like to know how I can revert back, would an XP setup disk
let me perform a system restore? I assume a restore point was created before
SP3 was installed.

XP SP3 is in beta stage. Contact Microsoft.

You must note that SP3 is not "officially" release to the general
public. You are to be "careful" while "evaluating" it since Microsoft
will probably not support any problems with it.

Yeah thanks, I thought this was a Technet newsgroup monitored by mcse's and
for use by Technet subscribers?

Boot into Safe Mode, open Add/remove and uninstall SP3 - you will be
reverted back.

What part of the word "public" in
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support"
looks like "Technet"??

You are mistaken. This is an ordinary public newsgroup.

Them's the chances you take with BETA software. BETA
software should be avoided by the casual user; leave it
to the Advanced users who understand it.
Can you remove it from Add/Remove? How about an
uninstall file in the \Windows folder? Either way
should work.

I cannot believe how rude everyone seems to be on this newsgroup.

Firstly, nearly everyone who replied assumes I am a user with no knoweledge
of the risk associated with Beta software and feels they need to warn me in a
partonising manner. I was meerly seeking adivce in case there was a method
less drastic than restoring a backup, sorry I asked.

Secondly, although this may be a public newsgroup I did arrive here by
clicking a link within Technet which said "managed newsgroups". On server
related issues people seem a little more friendly. Here the test from the
page listing this newsgroup:

"TechNet Managed Newsgroups

TechNet managed newsgroups are available in English to TechNet Plus and
TechNet Direct subscribers to receive free technical support on select
Microsoft technologies as well as to share ideas with other subscribers."

Thank you for your suggestion Pop, unfortunately the system will not boot in
any mode to allow me to uninstall via Add/remove. I'll call MS.

Gareth.

First, let me point out that you have gotten replies from a handful of
people. Please do not generalize from that handful to "everyone on
this newsgroup."

Let me point out two things:

1. You didn't tell us that you had any knowledge at all, and from your
initial message, it sounded like you were probably a beginner. Even if
you weren't a beginner, when replying to a newsgroup message, it's
always safest to assume very little knowledge, simply because that's
often the case.

2. You said you installed SP3. SP3 doesn't exist yet, and what you
installed was a beta version (or RC1) of SP3. Since you simply said
"SP3," without saying something like "SP3 RC1," it's a perfectly
reasonable assumption that you didn't even realize that it's a beta.

What you call "a partonising manner" was mostly people trying to help
and protect you in an area that it appeared you might know nothing
about.

Many people here read hundreds of messages in these newsgroups every
day and reply to dozens of them. Replies are often short and sweet,
and to the point, simply because there is little time to help people
and also add pleasantries to the messages. That's simply a fact of
life, and has nothing to do with people being rude or unfriendly.

Despite what I say in the paragraph above, you *did* get at least one
particularly rude messages. We are all individuals here, and it's
certainly true that there are some who are rude (or even worse). But
once again, please do not ascribe one person's rudeness to all of us.

Non-beta testers taking these blind "leaps of faith" on trying out less than
RC/RTM packages is hazzardous to you and your unit's health. I know folks get
hungry for the latest and greatest, but pulleezzee leave it to the more
experienced.

You're replying to the wrong person and preaching to the choir. I'm
not the one running the beta version, and you're repeating what I've
said many times in these newsgroups.
