"No Audio Device" is still there

Hello Everyone!
I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 with Windows XP, and since last week I am having
problem with playing music files or DVD either on WMP and even iTunes. I
reinstalled the sound card (SoundMax), installed DirectX, troubleshoot...it
still doesn't play sounds, not even the system sounds. However, the I can
hear the *.mid files play. I really don't know what to do next. Someone
suggested that I downloaded K-lite codecs, which I did but it was not of much
help. The music files just don't play on iTunes and I keep getting the
C00D11BA error message : no sound device is intalled etc. I followed the link
posted by Chris Lanier but nothing suggested worked, in the sound devices
window, under the volume tab everything is dimmed, i can't change anything.
Please HELPPPP!!!!
 
AFAIK iTunes needs Apple Quicktime and its codecs in order to work.

Thanks RalfG,
I do have Quicktime installed. The problem must be more general because the
iTunes is not the only player affected.

Hmm, not knowing what all you tried previously I'd say try reinstalling the
sound card drivers. Did you already try doing an XP System Restore to a
point just before the sound problems started?

If the Dell recovery software doesn't have the drivers available as an
individual re-install item you can usually get up to date drivers from the
sound card manufacturer..that includes drivers for onboard sound chipsets
(eg Realtek etc.). If you uninstall the old drivers (there may be an entry
in add-remove programs) and reinstall them clean Windows will hopefully
redetect the sound hardware and reinstall the appropriate devices properly.

Hi RalfG,
I did not do a system restore prior to the problem. owever, last night I did
a system restore on the pc, taking July 5th as my restore point. Now, the
sound is back, everything works fine with the exception that now, my pc
cannot detect my DVDs and play them. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

DVDs require 3rd party player software and an MPEG2 CODEC. The CODEC is
usually provided with commercial player programs (WinDVD, PowerDVD, Nero
etc.). Reinstall the original DVD player software you had on the system.
Some of the players conflict with each other so don't install more than one
player at a time. I once had my WinDVD install trashed by a free player that
was accidentally installed from a rental DVD.. same symptoms as yours.

Playing DVD

I updated my WMP this morning to the version 9 and reinstalled PowerDVD 5.1
(the reinstallation CD that came with it) on the pc. Later, I'll check if I
have the specified Codec. I was thinking about getting an update for my
DVD/CD-R/RW driver on Dell. Do you think that might help?

Re. the update.. nope, doubt it would make a difference unless there is a
bug in the existing drive firmware. Check in Device Manager, the actual
device driver is stock MS. I expect the update is for the drive firmware.
Those often deal with media or burner software compatibility issues.. or bug
fixes.

WMP depends on components from 3rd party DVD player software as well, so
that would be the area to concentrate on if the DVDs don't play at all.
Don't rely on how autoplay does or doesn't work to decide DVDs won't play.
Run the player software manually and try to play a DVD with it. If that
doesn't work there is still an underlying problem to solve but if it does
play manually you might only have to fix the autoplay settings to get that
part to work again.

Re: Playing DVD

OK, so I tried to play the DVD again without doing/checking anything to see
if it would play, and it did!!! Even the autoplay function works by itself.
Now, EVERYTHING is fine. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you for
all your help RalfG!!!
