In addition to Shenan's suggestions, let me add the following...
1. First of all we'll assume that following the installation of your new HDD
and installing a fresh copy of the XP OS, all your connections to your
speakers are OK and you've checked out that aspect.
Furthermore, the installing of the OS went smoothly and you didn't have any
problems installing the OS, right?
2. Can we assume that you're working with a sound card and *not* your
motherboard's integrated sound program (assuming it has one)? So that when
you speak of "updated audio drivers" you're referring to the drivers
provided by the manufacturer of the sound card you have installed?
And the sound card is properly installed? Occupies the same PCI slot that it
did formerly? No changes there?
3. Accessing Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices Properties...
What's shown at the top of the properties window that opens insofar as the
sound program installed on your machine?
Does it show the correct sound program?
The Mute button is unchecked?
When you click on the Speaker Volume button, the volume is shown as
correctly set?
After clicking on the Sounds tab and then highlighting any one of the
"Program events" listing that has a loudspeaker-type icon next to it and
then clicking on the arrow button just below that listing, do you get a
sound?
4. Assuming your motherboard *does* have integrated sound,
and assuming you're using an auxiliary sound card to provide sound, is there
setting in your BIOS involving the disabling of integrated sound?
