Is there an NG to ask about monitors?

My new LCD TFT widescreen monitor has 1 inch band down the side when I try
to put a 1440x900 desktop wallpaper on it.

Perhaps review your monitor resolution?

On the4 Display Properties under Desktop while the Wallpaper selected, there
is a button/Drop Down list has many options one of them Stretch, Center and
so on, select stretch and see if the wallpaper will fill the screen.
HTH.

Are you sure the wallpaper is correctly 1440x900?

Have tried 4 different websites all claiming their different wallpapers are
1440x900 and they all give the same result.

Perhaps you may want to try cropping your own picture to a 1440x900 and
see if the same happens.

The monitor manufacturer's support pages would be the first place to look
for answers, but some are better than others at providing them.

What is the native resolution of the monitor? Is the video adapter output
resolution setting set to the monitor's native resolution or something
lower? Higher? Is Windows set to stretch or center the wallpaper? Is the
entire image centered on the screen or is part of it shifted off the side
opposite the black band? Are there settings on the monitor itself to
reposition or resize the image?

The monitors resolution is 1440x900 and it is set to that. The NVideo
graphic card is also set to that. I have tried stretch, tile and centre. The
stretch one leaves the band down the side. The entire image is exactly
centred in the monitor. The settings in the monitor will move the whole
image one way or the other but none of them will re size the image. The full
screen is filled by every other software I have used.

Have googled for how to turn on active desktop and it says right click on
the desktop and choose active desktop when I right click on the desktop
there is no active desktop appearing.

All the advice seems to revolve around start>settings etc

When I click on start I don't see a settings option.

Try Properties, Web.

There is no settings option on the Start button, only Control Panel or
right-click-> Properties, which isn't relevent in this case.

The problem seems even more strange now. :)

If programs are running in full screen normally then maybe there is
something in the Nvidia advanced options that is affecting the way wallpaper
displays. I don't have Nvidia so I couldn't even hazzard a guess as to where
to look in those settings. Something pertaining to screen vs image DPI
perhaps?
