Next generation configuration

I am buying my daughter a new laptop for college. Hardware wise, it will
have 2G of memory, 160Gb disk, and a Dual-Core Intel processor. The college
currently supports XP and has made a deal with various factions to have XP
installed through December 08.

I've heard talk of Windows v7 (post Vista) becoming available in about 18 to
24 months. Given Vista's history, will this config be enough or will I need
more before she graduates.

Can anyone comment?

Microsoft has stated two things:

1. The plan is to have it available around the end of next year.

2. The plan is that it shouldn't need any more hardware than Vista
(and what you suggest is adequate for most people running Vista).

Note the words "the plan" in both of the statements above. There are
no guarantees, and many things don't turn out as planned.

18 to 24 months = around then end of next year

Maybe I should plan for 3 to 4 Gb memory. HD Upgrades willl be cheap
enough.
