new message on my windows

I don't know anything about tech details, but here's the problem:


As I'd been using a laptop and an old computer, I hadn't used this one and my windows OS for at least a year, possibly longer.

When I went back to using this one a couple of months ago, I noticed in the bottom right-hand corner a message that says "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting- this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation."

It was a genuine windows product (xp) when I purchased and installed it more than 5 years ago, so what's the reason for this message?


In addition, during the last couple of weeks I've been pestered with popups, redirects, and not being able to get into sites I often used before.


However, when I clicked the validate button, the download warned that the company couldn't be verified- so I don't even know if this is a hacking attempt or if it's actually from windows. I didn't think I should run the download file without knowing.
