.Net Framework 1.1 sp1 Install Fails

I'm trying to install .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack1 into my Windows Home
(sp2) computer. The installation fails and presents the following error
message: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an
unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more
information." The error code is 0x80000007. The application is running from
file C:\Doc~\Administrator\locals~\Temp\SL5C.tmp. The problem is repeatable.

I have the .Net Framework 1.1 installed as well as .Net Framework 2.0.
Earlier I'd wound up with two versions of 1.1 on my system and needed to
uninstall them to clear the security update flag in the desktop tray.

I'm not sure either how to proceed or where to search for an answer to this
problem. Any suggestions?

(1) You need to repair .NET Framework 1.1 - obliterating all remnants of it
and installing it/patching it fully.

(3) You need to repair .NET Framework 3.0 - obliterating all remnants of it
and installing it/patching it fully.

Unfortunately - there is no particular article pertaining to .NET Framework
3.0 that I could find. I have not had issues, however, just going into the
Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs and just locating/removing it and
its patches. I suggest you do the same and then reboot...

Reboot as needed and at the end.

(4) Cleanup your updates system...

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO"... May take a while.

Reboot when it is done...

(5) Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for updates. Choose
the critical updates you need and install them. Do not bother getting
hardware updates (unless you happen to have some Microsoft hardware
installed) and "Optional Updates" are *usually* just what the name infers -
but feel free to see if you want any of the "Optional" ones.

(6) Come back here and let us know how you faired.

I'm not having any luck. I followed your notes plus the notes in 824643 that
you reference. Here's what I encountered as I went through the steps:

1.e Couldn't find the Microsoft .NET Framwork 1.1 RTL86 in my Intaller
folder. I don't think that's a problem by itself, but may indicate over all
difficulites.

2.d Had to use Safe Mode to delete mscoree.dll file. Administrator
priveleges weren/t sufficient?? Or the file was damaged???

6. Not sure what is meant by a "clean start of computer." Is that with ALL
services disabled except installer and starting in diagnstic mode? I did
have McAfee antivirus and firewall disabled.

7. The install of .NET Framework 1.1 went pretty well until just before it
completed and I got a Runtime Error message due to program
c:\windows\system32\WBEM\WMIADAP.EXE prematurely quitting(?).

All the above was done with .NET Framework 2.0 supposedly installed.
However, it's messed up, too. I can't remove it from the list in Control
Panel Install and Remove, but it's not showing in the Installer folder. When
I select it under Install and Remove, it starts to install and then the
installation fails. I'm concerned that all of the .NET Framework stuff is
messed up and interacting somehow.

So, my present situation is that .NET Framework 2.0 is present in my sustem
somehow, somewhere and I can't get rid of it to do a correct install. I can
get rid of .NET Framework 1.1 (and have) but I can't seem to install it
without encountering a problem/error (as I described above).

Does this match anything you've seen before? Any ideas on how to proceed?

Shenan:

I finally had success using the instructions quoted on the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate news group under the topic "KB928366 Failed"
and written by Daniel_L on july 12th at 5:02PM. I used the tool from
Stebner's Weblog to clean my system. It worked for me. I could then install
from the Windows Update function directly without problem. Thanks for your
help.
