Need help with getting a TI-89 working with TILP under Mint 15/16

Keep getting an error relating to the 'cable needs reset' or 'not working due to previous current error'. There was a warning on install about changing permissions on the USB ports. Not sure how to do this. Any help wouild be apprciated.
