I'm trying to find a replacement hard drive for my Toshiba Satellite Pro M15-
S405 laptop. My other one died and I don't want to spend $400 to have it
fixed. I'm going to give it a try myself. But I need help in finding a
compatible drive.

My problem is I'm not sure what to look for. I know Toshiba doesn't make
the same one I have now. When searching on NewEgg and TigerDirect, I get
overwhelmed with all the numbers and letters next to the drives. Here's the
info from the hd that's in my computer now:

40GB (5400 rpm)
Enhanced IDE (ATA-5)
ODEM + 1CH4
Cache N/A

Could someone please point me in the right direction? I realize I probably
can't get a 40GB anymore, that's OK...I'll settle for a larger capacity. :)
If there's a specific style, etc. I should be looking for, could you please
help? I'd really, really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have replaced quite a few laptop disks and they were all built
to the same standard, without exception. Just get a 120 GByte
2.5" disk.

However, there is the problem of the drive geometry (LBA or
CHS). Have a look at the post with the Subject
"laptop - new HD - no CD or floppy drive", posted in this
newsgroup five days ago.

40gb IDE and SATA are £24.95 or £26.95, respectively, from Aria in UK :-

....though you'd have to look into compatibility in more detail.

.....that's 1024.95 and 1026.95 in US dollars, LOL ...just kidding !

....also looks like you would have to transfer hard-disk mountings to a
replacement drive.

regards, Richard

Thanks to both of you...now I just have to figure out what 'drive geometry'
is and how to convert UK $ into American! LOL

Please don't laugh but what do you mean by "transfer hard-disk mountings to a
replacement drive." I thought all I had to do was buy a new hard drive, put
it in and stick my restore CDs in. Too easy, huh?

That is the "adapter hardware" that is "attached" between the hard drive
and the case. 4 to 6 screws hold the "rails" to the drive, and then put
the drive in the case. May just slide in or may be attached by screws,
determined by the case design.

Is the UK now a US colony, using its own Dollar currency?
Anyway, when I bought my last disk and USB case I paid
the equivalent of US$80 for the disk and US$20 for the case.

Don't get over-excited by the drive mountings. Your biggest
challenge may be to get the hard disk out of the laptop. When
it's out then you simple lay them on the table, side by side.
You now remove the sheet metal case from one and put it
on the other. Any child could do it!

About "Drive geometry": Get into the BIOS setup of your desktop
PC, then check the details of your hard disk. You will most likely
see a setting for "LBA" or perhaps for "CHS". If you cannot find
it, ask a friend to assist you.
