Eric

I'm running Windows 2000 with SP4 & Update Rollup 1.
I have a dial-up connection with a firewall and I never use
Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.

I'd like any advice on additional patches or updates that
would be considered absolutely "essential" to have.

Hello Eric,

Even if you not use IE or Outlook express, Virus, spyware etc. can also reach
you over mail or if you just connected to the internet and use misconfigured
system files that are repaired with security patches etc. So update the system,
but NOT without saving your data before, that you can be sure you can still
access them if something fails during the update.

I agree. With Win2k ...all critical updates should be applied

There is an extension for Windows computers using Firefox, IE Tab, which
allows you to access and do what you need to do on IE-only sites, including
Windows Update. Long story short - put a WU bookmark in Firefox, click it,
and you will be able to run Windows Update even though there is no visible
Internet Explorer in either your Firefox user interface or your W2K GUI.
I've tried it, it works.

Hi Eric,

I also am running windows 2000 with SP4. I have been keeping up with all the
recommended updates, but I wonder if their has been some negative effects. My
PC has slowed down appreciably. I know it not a virus having scanned it both
with Norton and AVG. I frequently clean cookies and defrag the disk. Since
I have not added any new hardware and the PC seems to be ok, I suspect these
updates, but have no way to prove it other than backing them all out with no
assurance that will help.
