My XP no longer recognizes Drives D and E - what can I do?

I use Windows XP it has two disc drives (D & E). My computer no longer recognizes that a disc has been inserted, so:
I cannot copy to disc
I can't read data from discs
I can't play CD's or DVD's

What has happened? How can I get the computer to acknowledge these two drives again?
