My notebook needs therapy - it's ignoring its own trackpad and keyboard

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 running Windows XP SP2.
Out of nowhere, the trackpad and keyboard stopped working.... sort of.

All hardware works beautifully in Safe Mode, but as XP starts up
normally, the trackpad and keyboard responses go from jumpy to non-
existent. Obviously, it's not the hardware that's faulty, but I am at
a loss. I have done a complete restore twice and installed an
alternate OS (Win2K) all to no avail. I have flashed the BIOS with the
tools provided by Acer and there's no change. Does anyone have any
idea what's going on?

Installed the correct drivers from Acer and NOT used winupdate drivers?
