MY laptop and smartphone work fine on my home WiFi, but not my PC? Why?

Both the former work well on the WiFi, but my PC is either fair or poor. I was told this is because the Wireless adapter in the PC, which is about 4 years old, isn't very good. The laptop connection is always very good. Why is this? Someone also said the PC may have a virus on it. Any help?
