My computer jams and shuts down by itself

Hey guys,

I turned on my comp and after 2 mins it shut down by itself. So I turn it
back on and it says "A file or something you did caused (I can't remember of
course). To fix this problem restore your system to a previous date, if this
doesn't work do...

And then the screen went away. So when it booted up I set it back 2 days.
Alright good.. so it stays on for about 5 mins then it shuts off again. >.>
And now when I turn it on it loads, or atleast I hear it loading, but the
screen says there is no connection.

Help! I'm a student so don't really have the money to get it fixed by a
repair shop at the moment. =(

Since you need to fix it yourself, you need to identify the problem. Hints to
causes for a shutdown are found in the Event Viewer.
start/run, type:
eventvwr.
Some filename may be asociated with the error, and you can look at the file
properties to find out what application it is associated with.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. Then do whatever you
normally do to get the computer to jam and shut down.

Does the system just suddenly shut off and stay off, or does it show a
message and then try to restart?

If it just shuts down does not try to restart, this is an indication of
hardware failure, often caused by overheating. This is difficult and
expensive to diagnose, because the problem can be just about any of the
major and most expensive components - or more than one.

In this case, the problem will get worse, and you cannot heal it with
software. Often it makes more sense to replace the system.

If there are error messages, it's important to quote them accurately.

Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery - Settings, and
remove the checkmark from "automatically restart". This won't fix
anything, but if the problem isn't failing hardware, you'll get to see the
real error message, which will help you ask for help effectively.

I did the safe mode thing but I coudn't get the error to happen. So safe mode

It'll shut down the screen, but the screen is still on it's just black but
the comp is still running. I've got 3 fans and live in Canada.. it connot be
over heating LOL Hence the problem. =/ If it was just over heating it be easy
fixable, I cleaned it too. Yeah Gerry told me to do that too and that does
give me time to try and fix the problem. But the error doesn't show up in the
event viewer which is just plain weird

Do you have a spare working monitor? Have you tried swapping that for
the one in use. With hardware playing up if you have spare components
you should always test out what happens if you substitute them. This is
how a small computer repairs shop often scores over the DIY enthusiast.

the startup configuration
(start>run>msconfig)

then go to services tab and
hide all microsoft services
via the option. then disable
all services that are left.

secondly go to the startup
tab and disable all of them
and then exit and reboot.

Yeah I did that, infact I got 3 spare screens so I did it with all 3, it was
the same problem with all three. I tought maybe that it was a program I
installed that was causing the problem so I uninstalled all the recently
added programs, (just 2 of them thank god) and with the delay tactic you gave
me so it wouldn't reboot right away I had a chance to do that. So far so
good... Let's hope it stays that way. I don't know how a program could be
doing that though...

It most certainly can be.

Not necessarily. Damaged silicon can't be repaired, and if one component
has been hot enough to cook others can too.

It can be very difficult and expensive to determine exactly how extensive
the damage is.

But, since your original description of the problem wasn't accurate, none
of this may apply.

When a comp over heat, it gets real hot, and my tower is cold it it couldn't
of been over heating. Plus when I opened it, it was cold inside too, well..
luke warm, you know what I mean. But since I disinstalled the programs I
haven't had any problems. I was lucky this time that it was fixable without
going to buy parts. =) Thank you all that helped, it was appreciated ^^;
