Thousands of Microsoft MVPs are making efforts to help technical community members all across the world. Each of them has unique expertise, career paths, and audiences, and have been giving tremendous impact along the way. While all are Microsoft MVPs, their journeys to achieve this honor vary significantly.
In this blog, we feature a Chinese Microsoft Azure MVP, Edi Wang, who shared his personal story on his blog, offering valuable insights from his experience.
Edi developed an interest in computers during his childhood, and this curiosity fueled his continuous pursuit of advanced technical knowledge. As he delved into .NET programming, he started a blog in college to share his learnings. Post-graduation, he persisted in blogging while launching his developer career. Recognized by another MVP and the Community Program Manager in China, Edi was honored with the Microsoft MVP Award in 2017. Interactions with fellow MVPs, Microsoft leaders, and Product Group members spurred him to champion community initiatives, emphasizing open-source project contributions. Throughout his six-year MVP journey, Edi has continuously supported his community, always embodying humility as their devoted leader.
This is a brief summary of his past journey. You can read full story on his blog post: Microsoft MVP Testimonial: Transforming Lives in the Elite Tech Community.
In his blog, even though he describes his earlier experiences as “my college life was ordinary and unremarkable”, Edi showcased spirit of marvelous community leadership since when he was a college student. As a community leader who embarked on his technological journey whilst a teenager, Edi offers advice to technology students eager to enhance their skills for personal and professional growth. “Technology is a vast field, so it's important to identify the areas that genuinely interest you. Explore different domains and technologies to find your passion. This will make the learning process more enjoyable and help you stay motivated. Engage in practical projects that allow you to apply what you've learned. Build small applications, contribute to open-source projects, or participate in hackathons. Practical experience will solidify your understanding and boost your confidence. Collaborate with peers on projects or join open-source initiatives. And contributing to real-world projects allows you to work in a team, learn from others, and gain practical experience. It also helps you build a portfolio that showcases your skills to potential employers”.
Edi first became aware of the Microsoft MVP Award while starting his journey with .NET programming. Subsequently, he encountered the MVP title frequently, spotting it among session speakers at conferences and within his professional realm. As an MVP, he relished more opportunities to connect with fellow MVPs in his local community. Edi says, “Interacting with other MVPs has exposed me to a wealth of knowledge and expertise in various Microsoft technologies. I have learned new tips, tricks, and best practices that have helped me enhance my technical skills and stay up to date with the latest advancements. Also, witnessing the initiatives and projects undertaken by other MVPs has taught me the significance of giving back and contributing to the growth of the community. I have learned the power of mentorship, organized events, and creating resources that benefit others.”
Edi is focusing on delving into Azure container solutions, which is essential for new cloud-native development, such as Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Container Registry (ACR), Azure Container Instances (ACI), and Azure Container Apps. “These services offer powerful capabilities for deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications, and I believe that sharing my knowledge and experiences with the community can be highly beneficial,” Edi adds. Maintaining his dedication to development technologies as a Developer Technologies MVP, Edi broadened his technical expertise. He retains the same passion and growth mindset from when he began his journey with .NET Programming, as previously mentioned.
Lastly, Edi shares his tips for being a better community leader to whom interested in being an MVP in the future.
“MVPs are recognized for their impact on the community and their ability to lead and inspire others. Showcase how your contributions have made a difference, whether it's through helping others solve problems, organizing community events, or mentoring aspiring technologists. Establish a strong online presence by maintaining a professional website or blog where you can showcase your technical expertise, projects, and contributions. Use social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and GitHub to connect with like-minded professionals, share your work, and engage in conversations. Focus on your passion, continue to learn, and contribute to the community, and the recognition will follow”.
Every MVP has taken a distinct journey, and there's no prescribed path to be a community leader or a Microsoft MVP. One common passion all of them have is to help community members to grow together. If you are keen on leading a technical community but hesitate to take the first step, it is time for you to follow your passion. Every step you take is helping others, just like Edi empowered his community friends by sharing his knowledge. May Edi's experiences offer you fresh insights into the profound impact of community involvement.
