An icon has appeared on top of my desktop, it stays on top of all windows, it
has a grey background with a drawing of a speaker with a red line thru it and
the word Mute next to it. I have checked all the sound settings and none of
them are mute, can anyone help me get rid of it?

it might be either a function of your monitor if it has built in speakers,
(see the buttons on the screen itself )
OR
a function of the laptop Fn key if its a laptop, since the F keys (see top
row of keys on laptop) on most laptops control the volume of the sound too
