I have a problem with a recovered Windows XP system. It fails during bootup
unless I press F8 and boot in VGA mode, at which time I can resize to my
default screens size (1680x1050). I think it may be defaulting to a display
driver that is no longer valid. Can I manually change this at bootup (i.e.,
some kind of device driver file).

Boot it into Safe Mode, then change your display adapter driver.
