Lost in Texas

HP A810N w/160GB HD - 2GB Memory - AMD Athlon 64bit processor - IE7 browser
- WIN XP SP2 - Wireless broadband at 24mbps - 1. will download only a small
percent of large files before stopping. 2. will download small percent of
streaming videos such as those on ABC NEWS, YAHOO, REUTERS, YOU TUBE etc.,
sometimes only audio plays but only for a short time before quitting, never
completes. I have disabled all security and even started IE7 without add-ons
to no avail. Ran system diagnostic, codecs check okay. Computer is
virtually new but both Microsoft and HP refuse to do anything to help because
it is out of warranty. Strange deal, I bought the unit then left the country
a week later for a period of two years, so didn't ever set it up until March
of 2007. I have had problems from the start. Also didn't come with a
recovery disc and I tried to burn a recovery cd, according to HP's
instructions and it failed midpoint and won't resume. They now tell me a
recovery CD is no longer available. I feel sure something is wrong with the
OS but I can't re-install windows since a cd is no longer available. I have
a WIN XP cd from another Compaq computer. Will it work to reformat windows
on this new computer? Thought I had my problem solved, but it wouldn't
download UBUNTU from the CD. Any suggestions?

The compaq cd will not work on any other pc than which it was mfg to,none
of the hardware/settings,etc would match...As for video,at 24mbps youre
lucky to get even audio,a telephone internet connection max is 56kbps,but
they
usually run at 40kbps.Try updating youre boards internet controller from the
mfg web site (AMD),also reset wireless hardware.

If I were you, I would purchase a "full version" of Windows Vista
and perform a "clean install".

How to Install or Reinstall Windows Vista
