Hoping someone here can help.
Win XP SR2
Tried running MSINFO32.
Received a response
"CAN'T COLLECT INFORMATION"
"Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software.
Windows Management files may be moved or missing."

Within 'Services,' WMI shows it is running.
How do I resolve this?
FWIW, running services.msc results in . . . nothing. No apps appear to
start. No errors. nutin.

The first thing to do would be to make sure that the necessary services
and dependencies are running: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323209

If that doesn't fix it read here, there are several things to check with
DCOM that could cause the problem:

Thanks for the response.
Went back and checked all messages in my newsreader (Thunderbird) - no
response in the history although I found it by using the link you provided.
Went to the MS support link and viewed 'Resolution.'

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, make sure that the following services start
correctly:
• Event Log
• Windows Management Instrumentation
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

All 3 services are started and in Automatic. I do not know how to tell
if these services 'start correctly.'

Went to the attention-to-details web site. 3 steps suggested that caught
my eye.
1) Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Component Services
Administrative Tools is empty. nutin there.
2) Start DCOM Server Process Launcher
already started
3) rebuild WMI - two ways suggested - I tried both already.
A)- go to system32/wbem/repository and delete everything in there
- reboot & recheck if services & functions are OK (& making sure
wmi
is running, event log is running)
B) try these commands from Start/Run:
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemprox.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemcore.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemsvc.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\fastprox.dll

What next?

Try using DCOMCNFG.EXE from the Start Menu Run box and see if you can
get to the DCOM security settings.

If the Service status is started, then they have started correctly.

Thanks for the help. DCOMCNFG opened the panel(?).
Problem - I followed the text below but INTERACTIVE, NETWORK SERVICE,
AND SYSTEM were already set to allow. What next?
FWIW, when I selected DCOM Config I received a series of errors such as
"The CLSID (numbers), item c:\program files\microsoft
office\office\1033\msohelp.exe and title msohelp key search dialog has
the name value AppID, but is not recorded under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID.
Do you wish to record it?" I selected 'no' in each case. Bad idea?

Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Component Services

Then once in Component Services double click on the left hand side on
Component Services>click on + Computers> + My Computer> + DCOM Config

Look for Microsoft WMI Provider Subsystem Host>Right Click and go to
Properties>Security Tab>then to the 1st Edit button at the top of the
window>INTERACTIVE, NETWORK SERVICE, AND SYSTEM all need to be set to
allow instead of deny.

If you tried all that is mentioned in the provided link then I don't
have too many additional suggestions left except possibly rebuilding or
attempting to reinstall WMI. MVP Ramesh has done a nice job of
assembling a condensed version of possible fixes for WMI:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

If things still don't work after trying the fixes you may want to rename
the %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository folder and try again.

That shouldn't really matter, it isn't directly related to the problem
at hand. If you find that Office is acting strange you may want to
enable those or reinstall Office.

Have tried the steps above twice with no improvement.
Question - XP doesn't ask for my CD when it rebuilds this stuff.
Whereever XP gets these replacement files, could THEY be corrupt? If
so, where would I find 'clean' files?
