Msconfig error

Joe

I have:
Windows XP sp2
a Gateway 530x machine
2 gig of ram
Mcafee Security Center for anti virus
No Zone alarm

When I go into Msconfig I remove/add something to the startup I get this
message: "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the
specific cHnages."
I get this error in safe mode as well using the admionstrator account. I am
the only administrator on the computer-I have a guest acount set up. It
seems to make the changes in Msconfig ok-I just get this annoying error that
I have to click OK to get rid of. I did a virus scam, a system restore,
updates and tried all I know how to do. Please help.

That's the culprit, most likely.

This is always caused by poor software, eg. McAfee, ZoneAlarm and HP.

Why would it do it in safe mode because then Mcafee is not enabled?

I am not sure what that link wants me to do. Remove Mcafee? i do not have
a HP printer. or does it want me to do more spyware scan and if so what
application?
It refers to many reponses. What are you recommending?

Yes. Since McAfee is the culprit most likely, removing that software is
the first approach. Removing poor software, however, is no guarantee to
repair the system damages at the same time. Good luck.
