I have:
Windows XP sp2
a Gateway 530x machine 2 gig of ram
Mcafee Security Center for anti virus
No Zone alarm No HP printer
When I go into Msconfig I remove/add something to the startup I get
this message: "An access denied error was returned while attempting
to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator
account to make the specific changes."
I get this error in safe mode as well using the administrator account.
I am the only administrator on the computer-I have a guest account set
up. It seems to make the changes in Msconfig ok-I just get this
annoying error that I have to click OK to get rid of. I did a virus
scan, a system restore, Microsoft critical updates and Mcafee updates and
tried all I know how to do. This started happening last week after the
Microsoft critical updates and the Mcafee updates installed..
I posted on Micrsosoft newsgroups but the only answer anyone has said is
Mcafee issue or zone alarm or HP printer. I chatted (online) with a Mcafee
tech and he could not and did not think it was Macafee either. However when
I remove Mcafee from the computer I do NOT get this error. I also do not
get the error when I install an old version of Mcafee (came with comuter 6
months ago), it only starts happening when I update the Mcafee.
I have googled the error as well. No help worked as least of what I
tried. Many references to Zone alarm or HP printers.
I do not think it is Mcafee because when I start in the safe mode as
administrator Mcafee is not running, but if Mcafee is installed I still get
the error in the safe mode as well. I have even disable all services in
msconfig and restarted and still the error occurs. I have no idea what else
to try.
At thi spoint I would say it is a conflict between the Microsoft updates and
the Macafee updates. That is my guess. The Msconfig still works, it makes
my changes, I just get the annoying message.
Can you give me an idea of what to try?
Thanks,
Joe
