I have downloaded and installed MS Virtual Machine 2007. The documentation
was confusing. It indicated this application would run on an XP Home SP2
Box, 2.2Ghz Celeron, .5GIG RAM, 80GIG HDD. That's what I've got. I received
two caution messages as I installed it. They told me that I do not have a
"supported operating system" which I mean to take that Microsoft won't
provide me with technical support. The documentation was confusing however.
One site (on Microsoft.com) said that XP Home was supported and invited me
to download Vista to give it a try within this Virtual Machine. Has anyone
any additional knowledge with regard to this. Thank you.

you may be comparing apples and oranges.

There's a difference between being a support Host system (the OS that
Virtual PC runs on) and being a supported Guest system (the OS that runs on
a "virtual PC")

XP Home is supported as a guest, not as a host.

See: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/sysreq.mspx

Yes, you can install VPC on your XP Home system, and as you surmise, MS will
not provide any support. With only 500MB RAM, you will not get very good
performance of any guest machines, as XP really needs that 500MB just to run
decently. The amount of RAM you should add to your system depends on what
OS you plan to run as guest - you should add whatever its minimum is, even
better to add more than that. MS's recommended minimums are notorious for
being well below acceptable performance levels.
