movie has no picture, but has sound.

there is audio when i watch a movie thru media player but there is no picture. instead what appears on the screen is the visual effects that would normally come out when i play music.
help! im not techie.
i may have changed the settings without me knowing it. now i cant watch movies through my laptop.
