Hello, I hope you are able to help. I keep finding Modem #1 Line Playback in
Sounds and Audio Devices Properties instead of AC'97. In Device Manager I
found that in Sounds, video and game controllers that Microsoft WINMM WDM
Audio Compatability Driver has a yellow exclamation mark next to it. I
uninstalled this and rebooted to find that AC'97 had returned but needed to
be clicked on to allow it back into Audio and Voice and then I checked the
default button. The problem is it keeps reverting back to Modem #1 Line
Playback on a daily basis and is most annoying. What am I getting wrong here
and how do I correct it for good?.
Please keep your answer basic for a non techy, too technical will lose me.

I am running XPHome 2002 with SP2
Acer Aspire SA60-3870
Intel Celeron 2.80 Ghz
running AVG Free Edition
and AVG AntiSpyware both updated. Thankyou in advance.

Try re-installing the AC'97 driver. You can get it here:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/ac97.html

Before installing, uninstall the existing version in Device Manager.

Luck!

Claymore, Thanks for replying. Can you tell me is it the Realtek AC'97 Audio
Driver Package 4.03 that I should install do you know I would hate to be
installing the wrong one. Thanks again.

Hello Again, I am totally lost here knowing what to driver to download.
Thanks for the links guys but I am still non the wiser for it. It is
Microsoft WINNMM WDM Audio Compatability Driver that is yellow flagged. The
driver I think I need to replace reads Realtek AC'97 version 5.10.0.5630 but
when I go looking in Acer site I don't know if it should be Audio Driver and
Utility; On-Board Realtek Audio Driver or Chipset Driver v 2.0.3 I download
or indeed anything else. All this seems beyond me though I am willing to try
given the right advise. Very Frustrated. Muttlee

Hello again muttlee,

"Can you tell me is it the Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver Package 4.03
that I should install do you know I would hate to be installing the
wrong one. "

The link I gave you should be the one you want - note the file name:
WDM_A403.exe

Even if iy doesn't work, you can always "roll back" the driver by
selecting the device properties in Device Manager.

Luck!

Claymore, Once again thanks for your reply and indeed help. It would seem all
is well since I followed your advice a big thanks to you. Frustration over.

OH NO!, Modem #1 Line Playback has returned and all my sound has gone again!
Even after following the advice from Claymore which did seem to cure the
problem. I downloaded and saved the driver and installed it but, Microsoft
WINMM WDM Audio Compatiblility Driver 5.1.2535.0 has not returned after
uninstalling it because it was yellow flagged again following someones
advice. Does anyone know where I can get this and anything else it may need
please along with any advice and correct way to install, like how to stop
this damn Modem#1 from placing itself on my pc. Thankyou
