I've tried the suggestions for correction. I've gone to the recovery
console on the set up disk. I try bootcfg /rebuild and it won't work
because it says Error: FAiled to sucessfully scan disks for Windows
installations. This error may be caused by a corrup file systesm,
which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to
detect any disk errors.

I try chkdsk and it only goes 26% or so and then it quits. And round
and round we go. I have a laptop but I want my files off this desktop
and I use it as a print server.

I can't do some of the fixes because Windows XP never starts. It
either keeps erroring out about the hal.dll file or the above happens
when I use the set up disk from Gateway.

Is it dead?

Thanks
Cindy

You might be able to get a floppy disk and copy the hal.dll file to it
from another computer. Then copy it to your computer using the recovery
console, or safe mode with a command prompt.

You could boot with knoppix and burn the files you need/want from your
system.

or do a repair install
