I would appreciate a short primer on Microsoft Networking and Server
certifcation programs, course and self-study options, etc. A bit of
background:

I have been a Netware administrator for a decade or longer. I currently
adminster an environment that includes 4 Netware 6.5 server and 1 Microsoft
SBS Premium. I have learned enough to do what I need through the
administration tools supplied with the server plus the occasional phone call
to the hardware vendor, in this case Dell, who have been generous in their
support of questions that are about the Server OS and not specifically about
their hardware.

The site in question is moving and has decided to get rid of Netware and go
all Windows for their new location. I need to specify a server or servers
to handle back file sharing. The company has only about 20 users but the
administration is complex relative to the number of users because there are
quite a few group and individual rights managed so that people only have
access to what they need and nothing more whenever possible.

We currently use Novell's BorderManager and its client-to-site VPN for
remote access, running Symantec's pcAnywhere are the remote connection is
made. We would like to get rid of all that as well and go with a purely MS
solution if one is available, or at the very least, have the VPN handled by
the router if it's not going to be handled by the server. We're also
looking for new backup software and wish to have offsite backup, and will
have T1 bandwidth to the Internet.

Thanks very much in advance for advice on what I ought to do next. I am
located in northern NJ if that matters.

Thanks again.

Hello,

SBS is quite different from "normal" server, because it's a lot of product
in one, and has many wizard.

Are you keeping this SBS ?

You will need to audit your Netware (security / shares / policy)
how many files ? Is it replicated between servers ?
Are these servers making others jobs ?

Under 10 servers, you may use ntbackup or ArcServe/Backupexec

I prefer reading books that getting certification, but that's a personal
choice...

Maybe - if it's easier to replace it (read: if it turns out to be a better,
lower maintenance solution to replace it), then we will replace it.

Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of files.

Right now, Retrospect from EMC/Danz is our backup software. We backup the
main production server to a second/backup production server, plus we backup
the backup server to tape, plus we backup changed files from the production
server to a pair of USB drives attached to a workstation.

I don't know what "are these servers making others jobs?" means.

I loathe ArcServe and haven't heard great things about BackupExec, either.

If you would be so kind, please recommend some reading.

Merci.

You may keep your SBS if it's quite clean...

You should keep your current backup solution, arcserve or backupexec will
hardly make the same job.

I spoke about 5-6 Novell server, i was asking what they are doing to get an
idea on which roles will have your future full MS environnement to serve :)

Reading ? all books you can get a hand on !
<an SBS book>
Active Directory 3rd edition
Windows internals
