As reported on 5/9 three days ago, the update of mse antimalware client from 4.4.304.0 to 4.5.216.0 was successfully completed after using a hotfix for installer 4.5 provided by Microsoft. The system was scanned, definition updates were dld, and the system ran well for 72 hours

Suddenly 5/11 Sunday night an automatic interim" MSE update to 4.5.216.0 KB2949787 appeared in the systray, with a link to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link Id=195462 for more information, but that connection provided nothing except the old text about XP passed end of support, blah, blah, blah.

However using SysInternals Process Explorer (procexp.exe) I was able to observe an undisclosed application opened remotely on my PC from Microsoft, AM_Delta_Patch_1.173. 1739.0. . . which apparently reverted the updated MSE Antimalware Client 4.5.216.0 to the previous version 4.4.304.0 which was the ID for the previous engine update installed about 12-13DEC2013.

Since MSE is working, the icon is green, I thought OK, but now ICS is disabled, and even opening Administrative Services as the Admnstrator it is impossible to run ICS manually or automatically run.

I don't know if patches are customarily installed as AM_Delta_Patch . . . in the background as this one was? However since 4.5.216.0 was working well I don't know why the applet was reverted to its previous 4.4.304.0 version?

The more of this type of Wizard of OZ machinations which transpire, e,g, "Don't look at the man behind the screen!" while the versions and hotfixes and interim downdate (?usage?) patch AM_DElta_Patch_1.173.1739.0 are being slid across in the background, the less confidence this user has in the credibility of the process.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it -- especially since the "interim" update for MSE 4.5.216.0 aka KB2949787 has no apparent presence on any Microsoft webpage, explanation, further information ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link Id=195462) was a link to nothing specific, just the months old statment about the end of support for XP.

Either someone is afraid of losing their job, or someone is attempting to paper over a massive screw-up, or else conspiracy nuts are the ones in the know?

Any explanations for this complete 180 degree change, twice, in 72 hours?

Thank U grnstgy
