Will Microsoft Media Centre be made available as a download? My new laptop
came with Windows Vista Home Basic which included Windows Media Player but
not Windows Media Centre.

Also, will it be possible to upgrade to Windows Home Premium at a later
date?

You can upgrate using "Easy Upgrade" online.

Don't expect to see WMC available for download any time soon though.

Mic

Windows Media Center is a feature specific to the consumer Vista Editions
such as Home Premium and Ultimate only. Microsoft has not made any intention
of making this feature available to other Vista SKUs.

You can upgrade to anytime to another Vista SKU from Home Basic using the
Anytime Upgrade feature available in Control Panel. You will be given a
license key so that you can use your current disk Home Basic to upgrade to
Home Premium or even Ultimate.

For some reason I thought upgrading from Home Basic might be cheaper than
loading a Home Premium Upgrade disk, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Looks like I'll be sticking with Home Basic for a while.

There is no upgrade option in Control Panel in the OS loaded on my new
laptop.

You should be able to use the Vista Home Premium Upgrade version to upgrade
from Home Basic.

Unfortunately the Vista Home Premium Upgrade software is rather expensive
(150 pounds - half what I paid for the laptop!).

You shold be able to buy an OEM version of Vista Home Premium for about £60.

What I am curious about is why you want Media Centre?

Where am I going to get an OEM version of Vista? The next model up from my
laptop does come with Vista Home Premium, but I don't think Acer sells it.

Where Media Centre is concerned, it's supposed to be much better than Media
Player, enabling you to download, for example, TV programs and burn them to
DVD.

is just an example. Plenty of places sell it.

There is an upgrade option in the Windows Welcome window. The cost is £63-07
including VAT. The question is, is it worth upgrading to Home Premium or
should I stick with Vista Home Basic?
