mic line very poor

I have a abit mb running win xp pro. The mic line requires the max gain
which results in 'naturally speaking' not working. Sound out works fine (but
not from the mic). Tried tower front & back ports, 3 different head sets but
no banana. Wonder if a sound card would work? Any ideas? TIA

Check the documentation for the sound solution. Some have a "20 dB boost"
button in the control panel.

The only exception I can think of, is an early HDaudio chip, where it
seems they didn't put enough gain options in the chip. At least, it
was never clear that the error was driver related, and the chip itself
was designed wrong (i.e. not designed to match the capabilities of
the preceding AC'97 designs).
