I have an 8-month old ASUS Q501LA laptop (touchscreen, Intel i5-4200U, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD) running Windows 8 (not 8.1), and it frequently forces a shut down when I've close the screen and have it unplugged. (This happens frequently as I take it to work and bring it home everyday.) Usually, it is off when I open it back up after I've arrived at work or home, and I get a message after I turn it on, or log back in, saying Windows had to shut down because of an error. Sometimes it's simply shut down when I get to work or back home, and sometimes it has rebooted itself. I am always careful to save any work before closing the lid, but I feel like I shouldn't have to "walk on eggshells" all the time. Today, however, I was lucky enough to catch a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT error before it attempted a reboot. The reboot failed and I had to shut it down manually.

While this may or may not be related, the computer won't "wake up" after it's been idle for a long time. The Power indicator says it is running, and the HDD activity light will flash, but nothing happens regardless of what key or key combination I press. The backlit keyboard will light up for (literally) a second and fade back out. The only solution is to force a hard shut down.

I have not upgraded to Windows 8.1 because I have a few programs that won't run, even in compatibility mode, with 8.1. I have installed all other updates, from ASUS, Intel, and Microsoft. In January, I restored the computer to out-of-the-box Windows 8 state, because it was acting incredibly slow. I did this again in March, because it had begun having these shut-down-while-closed-and-unplugged issues with more regularity. Now these problems are expected and routine.
