My Memorex 8 gig external memory device is not working properly. File
transfers back from the device into Windows XP files is VERY slow. I also
need to rename the device for my laptop, since I have an external memory
device on my network desktop with the same letter, and the laptop only
recognizes that device when I'm at work. How do I rename the USB device to
another letter?

Exactly the same way that you reassign any other drive letter.

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. Now select 'Drive
Management' from the left pane and wait a moment or three.

All the connected drives should be displayed on the righ complete with
partitions. All you now have to do is right click on the partition you wish
to change and select 'Change Drive Letter'. A drop down box offers you all
the unused letters. Pick one. Click 'OK' and your device will be
reassigned.

The selected letter should stick provided the device is always plugged into
the same USB port, unless it is a serial numbered device in which case it
will retain the drive letter when plugged into any port. This assumes that
the letter is not assigned to something else first.
