I have a Music folder that on XP shows 42.8 gigs and when I took to a friend
with Vista it shows as 25 gig. Why does it show such a difference?

How did you "take" it to a friend?

On a external hard drive.

Large, portable hard drives are a dime a dozen now. Carrying around 100 GB
of files is no big deal these days.

How does this answer my question of why such a large size diff between XP and
Vista?

Well, I'll take a dozen for a dime... -)
It might make a difference whether he took the same drive, or copied the
folder to another drive, and didn't get all the files.

Yes I use this drive on both of my systems when need to back up or save
files. Friend wanted to look thru my music and that was when I noticed size
Vista showed.

Wild guess:

Some of the files are marked "Hidden." On your machine you're set to show
"Hidden files and folders" and his machine is not.

Could be. I always set mine to show all files. Other system is new and would
not have been set that way. I will check and see. Thanks.

Well just set my folders to default and on D drive still shows as 42.8 gigs.
So will bring the external drive home today and check it on my system.

Well turns out when I made a new copy not all of the files got copied to the
external drive. So operator headspace on my part for not checking in first
place. Tks all.
