Media Sharing won't activate

I'm running Vista Home Premium on a new PC (HP). I share a wired LAN with my wife's PC (Dell) that also runs Vista Home Prem. Our router is a wireless Linksys WG54, but the two PCs in question are Ethernet wired to the router. The LAN works fine -- I share files, printers, etc.

The problem is that when I go to Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel and try to change Media Sharing from Off to On, it won't change. I click the arrow next to Media Sharing, then click the Change button. The Media Sharing dialog box appears and my other PC shows in the Share My Media to: box. I select my wife's PC, click Allow and then OK. That returns me to the main Network and Sharing Center screen, but Media Sharing still shows Off.

We're both running Windows Firewall. I checked the firewall settings and there doesn't appear to be any setting there that would block media sharing. We're also both running AVG anti-virus and Windows Defender.

On my wife's PC, I switched Media Sharing from Off to On without any problem when I set it up.

I would be thankful for any suggestions as to why Media sharing won't switch to On on my PC?
