Opening player causes error message that file wmploc.dll has a version #
11.0.6000.6344 where 'version 10.0.0.3646 is expected. Media Player is not
installed correctly and must be reinstalled.'
When I go to web site the new version downloaded won't install since it is a
version of 11 that is older than the version 11 shown above. Help!

It's likely that running SFC will straighten out the Media Player version
problem. Open a Command Prompt and type:

SFC /SCANNOW

Courtesy of zachd [MSFT]:

In the Start Search box above the Start Orb type: cmd .

When cmd.exe appears at the top of the Start Menu, right click on it and select
"Run as Administrator".

In the Administrative Command Window type (or copy and paste):

unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion

Press enter.

Restart your machine.

Cal Bear was spot on. You can also upgrade to Vista Service Pack 1 to fix
this.

What had you installed previous to this occuring? From the error you
received, you had installed some old broken Windows Media Player version 10
tool... =\
