Media Player ver 10.

Hi,

Windows Media Player ver 11 has been out for a while now and I've yet to see
a version that will install on Windows Server 2003.

Eventually (if not already), Microsoft will undoubtedly stop creating
security patches for Media Player ver 10 (which is installed on 2K3 by
default) and this concerns me that I may have a big security risk looming on
my servers.

If Microsoft has abandoned Media Player on 2K3 thus leaving it to defend
itself, shouldn't there be a mandatory patch to force its deinstallation?

Any thoughts?

Hello,

how can it be a security issue if not launching it ?
Off course it's better to have up-to-date binaries, but i am not aware of
any issue with windows media player on server if not using it (directly or
through internet explorer)

Are you saying that Microsoft recommends that Media Player should never be
run on 2K3? And that my Terminal Services users who run all sorts of things
from their TS desktops now need to have Media Player restricted from their
access?

So yes, sure I use Media Player on the server. Why shouldn't I? Microsoft
installed it by default!

If Microsoft is telling us that they made a mistake by including Media
Player with 2K3, then where is the KB article that instructs the community
about this?

Thanks for your assistance!

Bob.

Hello Bob,

Yes, this is not a recommended installation. We cannot ensure what symptoms
will occur. If you want to use Windows Media Player 11, you may try it.

| Hi Ken,
|
| I guess this means that MS will still support MP ver 10 and continue to
| patch it as necessary.
|
| And I suppose there is nothing overly dangerous with using MP ver 10 on
the
| server either.
|
| I found a technique on how to install v11 on 2K3, but I would imagine MS
| would not recommend it and would probably result in an unsupported
server.
| Right?
