I believe that Windows Media Player 11 is the default version that is
included with Vista? Open Media Player and select Help/About Media Player.
It should show version 11.0.6000.6344.

Hi, Oppie.

Isn't WMP 11 already built into all versions of Vista, including Vista Home
Basic?

Just look in All Programs under "W" for Windows Media Player. Start it,
then click Help | About Windows Media Player. If you don't see the Menu Bar
with "Help" on it, right-click on the black "Now Playing" bar. (I don't
like not having Help and the other buttons always visible, so I check Show
Classic Menus.)

Ronnie,

Will check this tonight - thank you.
Still doesn't explain why the microsoft website to download media player
identifies me as having XP rather than Vista. That is a bit troubling.

Ronnie - Right you are, it is the version you suggested. No update needed.
Questions remain:
Why did the download page not say, "you already have the latest version"
that many pages show?
Why did it identify me as having XP rather than Vista?

Thanks for your assistance.

Because if you were a Vista "N" system user (those people without Windows
Media Player), you would need the XP installer in order to get the trigger
package installed that subsequently lets Windows Update know you really
truly do want the "Media Restore Pack" that pretty much restore an "N"
system to a regular Vista system (with Windows Media Player).

That was a lot of words. Probably not interesting. I'll make sure the page
is coherent tomorrow. Thanks for pointing out this potential item of
interest to review.

Cheers,
